How Search Engine Optimizaton (SEO) Works

An Article by Thomson Web Design

How Search Engine Optimizaton (SEO) Works

Search engine optimization. The key for every website to the front pages of google and yahoo, the most desired spot for most businesses. So how exactly do you get there?

The search engine engineers have never fully revealed the secrets behind the art of SEO, plus the methods are forever changing, however, there are a few known ways and constants that will forever (or at least for a very long time) remain important to search engines and their spiders (they crawl your website for good content) and i shall, against the wishes of many SEO experts, reveal some of the tricks of the trade to you.

1. Design
The design of a webpage is crucial in all aspects. The way the headings are placed and the locations on the website they are placed are crucially important factors. The optimum placing for headings would as most people would guess correctly, be near the top of the page. However, be careful not to use pictures and images as your headings because the spider is unable to understand pictures (at least not yet) unless you know how to mask the codes. You can either try this out yourself or hire a professional web company to do this for you.

2. Content
Content is also crucially important to search engines and spiders to ensure a high page ranking. The content that you have on your web page must strike the perfect balance between prominence and density, basically you must not overuse a certain keyword nor underuse it. The perfect balance on a webpage for a certain keyword density should be near the 7% mark, you can analyze your webpage with various tools, however i urge you to read through all the techniques first because you'd wanna properly equip yourself first. Anyway, one of the tools being the following : http://ranks.nl/tools/spider.html
Also do note that not only is keyword prominence and density important, the locations you place them are crucially important too (hence prominence), you would want them in headings and at the start of various paragraphs, however, try not to overuse this technique!

More importantly. Remember to write for your customer and not for the spiders as what's the use of good page rankings if your website is simply spider food? Just stick to writing good content and let google handle the rest, justice is always served.

3. Back Links
Perhaps one of the most decisive factors of search engine optimization has to be back links. This increases your page rankings tremendously if you have high quality back links to your website. A back link is when another website has a link of your website on their home page. However, it's important to note that google ranks pages from 1 to 10, you can download the google toolbar to see the page ranks of websites when you visit them or aternatively, there are various websites offering such services, just google them.
Anyway, it is important that high ranking pages link back to your website to get good page rankings from google, however take note that the websites linking back to you has to be relevant to your website as believe it or not, the google spiders can find out. There are various ways to attain this back links, one is through reciprocal link backs where you place their link on your website (also known as link exchange), however despite being less valuable when it's a two-way link back, it's effective nonetheless. Another way is to contact the bosses of the company and request a link back, however this is difficult unless your website has something really good to offer. Do not ever buy links as google can track that too and it never works out. Try to get high quality links to your website the legitimate way, as anything built on integrity never falls back on you.

On another note, a few things to avoid would be the following : link farms, buying of links, companies offering instant high page rankings as such stuff nevr ever work and google would ban your website and oh God forbid that.

Thus in conclusion, there are many ways to attain high page rankings from google and many web developing companies can help you with this goal and this are a few ways out of the many ways to get them.

Apple's booming App Store tops 100,000 programmes

Apple's booming App Store tops 100,000 programmes

Wow the App Store has certainly came a long way from when it started.
I personally use an iphone and am very impressed by the wide availability of applications for almost anything i need.

However does this mean you should go and get an iPhone immediatey?

Well it depends.

There are many who have bought the iPhone and found it unsuitable for them.
So for the benefit of everyone, lets go through 4 things you should take into consideration.

1) What is the purpose of your phone? - An iPhone is a lifestyle phone comprising of an iPod , sleek iPhone interface and lots of applications. However it does not match up to phones tailored for business. For eg : BlackBerry's , Nokia E Series etc

2) Do not get it just because if looks good. - If all you require from your phone is emails , some mobile apps and to make calls. Then perhaps the iPhone would be an overkill and you will most likely end up not using all of its functions.

3) Does bulk matter ? - An iPhone is bulky and fragile. Make sure you hold it and try it out before you decide to get one!

4) On-Screen QWERTY! - The iPhone has an onscreen QWERTY keypad which many has found troublesome. Its because you cannot feel the keys and makes it unsuitable for people with long finger nails.

Overall the iPhone is a very good phone. But it might not suit everybody.
Most importantly for anyone looking to buy it, is to look carefully into what you're looking for in a phone and decide if the iPhone has everything.
Or maybe just a tad too much.

Worms infesting computers worldwide: Microsoft

http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/technologynews/view/1015510/1/.html

The problems never seem to end with Microsoft.
This serves yet as another reminder to the general public to be wary with thumb drives etc passed around.

Many a times, worms can go undetected even if you have a virus scan.
They copy themselves over to your systems even before you open the drive.

To combat this situation we at Thomson Web Design have came up with a few tips!

1) Patch your system regularly. This will ensure you are protected from the latest worms and security loopholes in your system.

2) Do not download from suspicious sources!

3) Scan your zip files / exe files etc before opening them! Worms may even hide in images files too!

4) Ensure that whoever passes you an external drive, scans it for viruses first.

5) Remember to update your anti-virus regularly.

6) Always have a backup of your system, so if anything major happens, you can revert to your backups.

Yahoo! shuts down GeoCities

Yahoo! shuts down GeoCities

From the 2nd on November onwards. Geocities will no longer be available to Yahoo! Users. This was reported by Yahoo! Who in efforts to increase profits have decided to move their investments elsewhere.

This is a good example of what happens when using a free hosting company. Despite the benefits of a 'no cost startup', these companies are forced to allocate very little resources and cram alot of users onto the same servers to reduce their costs. This greatly reduces the reliability and speeds of the user's websites.

Imagine : you've spent hundreds of dollars at setting up your new website only to have it inaccessible or loading very slowly due to the server being overloaded by other users. Or perhaps you find that your business email account is constantly inaccessible. These are just some of the pit falls of using a free hosting service.

Therefore sometimes paying a few dollars a month isn't a too bad idea if you're serious about your website. For example you get your own domain name! 'http://www.yourdomain.com' sure beats 'http://www.geocities.com/yourcompanyname' anytime right? Other benefits of using a paid service are :

- reliable support
You don't have to wait a whole day just to get your question replied.

- dedicated resources
Servers are usually well maintained and managed.

- Uncluttered Server
Providers will normally have a maximum limit to the amount of users on each server to ensure maximum effeciency.

- Server location
You get to pick the location of your server if the provider allows it.

Therefore if your're serious about your website, a few dollars a month would far outweigh the disadvantages of a free hosting provider.

However all these technicalities like bandwidth , linux / windows / , php / asp support , various databases etc that comes with choosing a web hosting provider can prove to be a headache.
Therefore if you really mean business, then perhaps you can consider getting a company who will design your website and host it for you at the same time!

Such providers are usually alot more reliable and take care of everything for you. So all you need to do is take care of your business.

Take us at Thomson Web Design (http://www.twd.sg) for example. We take care of all our customer needs - so well that they don't have to worry about anything at all. We design their websites , we take care of the domain registrations for them, then we host it for them on our own servers based in Singapore.

On top of that, we also have technicians available round the clock to attend to any issues our customers might have and ensure that the necessary technical help is administered to ensure uptime of their websites.

So if you are serious about your website, perhaps you can consider a provider that will take care of everything for you.
